Car Buying Tricks Auto Leasing And Dealer Ads

Don't be fooled by the car dealership advertisements that come out in the Sunday paper. All those low monthly payments dealers quote are lease payments. Car Leasing helps dealer's out. You are paying good money to depreciate the value of the car while they sell the car to a Leasing Company. The leasing company pays the dealer MSRP for the car, and their work is done. Now, when you are done with your 36 month lease, the leasing company is able to sell it again and have made money on the depreciation.

  • If you want to get a good deal on a lease, don’t mention the lease until you have gotten the price of the car down below MSRP. If you could talk them down $1,500 from MSRP on a 36 month lease, you will be saving yourself the price of your monthly water bill. Seriously!
  • Make sure you bring in a copy of the ads you see in the paper. Most often, they don't have any more of the cars they are advertising because it is "too" good of a deal. By getting you into their store, they can offer you 'similar' deals on cars that will make them a bit more money. You can bet any price you see on a dealer ad won’t be available when you get there.
  • If you see an ad for a car you like, make sure you go in that day to discuss the deal. Most car dealers will say a car is only good for 'that day' the ad was published. Beat them to their own game by reading the paper early and heading in to the dealer to discuss the ad price.

Keep An Eye Out For Ad Tricks Like These:

  • Never believe you will get the first 'loan payment' taken car of by the dealer. They just add the first loan payment onto the last one or spread the amount of the loan out over all your payments. Don't fall for this advertising trick in the paper.
  • "Up To 20% off! When someone says 'Up To', that up to number is not applicable to you. The 20% is probably for the worst color, or a dealer demo, or something undesireable. Go ahead and ask the dealer yourself when you see an ad like this. You will most always recieve a strange answer.
  • “See store for details”. Isn't this one getting a little old? It is clear to me that if you advertise with one of these lines, the advertisement is fake. Why do I have to go into the store to get the details? Is there something shady about this ad?.........YES!
  • “We’ll pay off the rest of your loan or lease amount". Make sure you have come close to agreeing on a price for your new car before bringing up the fact you have a current car loan or a trade-in. Dealer's hate this, because now they have given you a great deal and they have to give you an even better deal for buying your car or your loan.
  • Make sure you tell the car dealer that when he tells you lease payment prices to include taxes. Why do I need to know the cost of the payment before taxes? So you can add on taxes at the end and ruin my deal? Come on.
  • Look for any numbers included in the ad. This means that the ad is relating to a specific car. Call the dealer before you go down there and ask if that current stock number is on the lot. Most of the time the answer will be no.
