Taking Your Car To College What You Need To Know

Deciding to take your car to school should be more than just a quick decision. Most kids think they have to have it, but do you really?  Read below to find out what’s best for your college experience.

Important! Before You Buy A Car For School, Make Sure You Know The Following Information:

  • Have You Read Our Guide On Buying Used Cars? Read This

1. What Kind Of College Environment Will You Be Living In?

  • Just because you had a car in high school does not mean that it is the best answer for college. The first thing to research is to find out what sort of amenities your campus has such as grocery stores, restaurants, nightlife, etc. If there is a lot of this on or very near your campus, having a car might not be a big priority.

2. What Majorities Of Students Live On Or Just Off Campus?

  • Living amongst a big college community means that you will be hanging out with a lot of people on campus and you no longer will have to drive to see your friends.  All your buddies are now just a walk away. Also with many students living in a college community, there will most always be a public transport system provided by the school. For the little amount of driving you will do, public transport might work just fine.  Trust me, it’s better than having to find parking every time you come back to campus. Keep in mind, many students do not bring their car to school the first year, so if you bring a car, chances of you having to taxi around a lot of people are great. You don’t want to become a taxi driver your first couple years of school or constantly have people asking to borrow your car.

3.  Getting Home For Holidays

  • If you are going to school close to home where a friend or family member can pick you up, great. However, most students live far away for their college experience. In this case, factor in to your car decision how often you will come home and how much that is going to cost each time. If having a car to drive home will save hundreds of dollars over flights, a car could be a good option.  Many students know people at their school from their hometown. Find out who you know that is going to your school and see if they are bringing a car. You can always carpool home together for breaks.

4. What Are Some Other Factors I Should Consider?
